Captain Jack Ransom: Lower Decks' Underrated Hero

Jack Ransom

Lower Decks' cancellation left a gaping hole in my sci-fi-loving heart. I yearned for more episodes, more Cerritos shenanigans, and more of those fantastic characters. While Tendi, Mariner, and Dr. T'Ana hold special places in my heart, my absolute favorite remains the enigmatic Jack Ransom.

I know, I know. An unconventional choice. Most fans probably gravitate towards the more obvious heroes. But hear me out.

Ransom began as a caricature - the narcissistic, self-absorbed, ass-kissing officer. His initial purpose seemed to be to antagonize Mariner and provide comedic relief. He was all about appearances, obsessed with his physique, a veritable Johnny Bravo in space.

But beneath that polished exterior, a surprising depth emerged. We slowly witnessed the evolution of his leadership. Yes, his methods were often unorthodox, even self-serving at times. But Jack genuinely cared about his crew and their growth. His missions, though often chaotic, always concluded successfully. He pushed his officers beyond their comfort zones, challenging them with achievable goals, setting them up for triumph.

Ransom played a pivotal role in Mariner and Boimler's development. He provided unwavering support and trust, guiding them into becoming exceptional Starfleet officers.

And let's not forget his dedication to fitness! As a lifelong Crossfitter, I was ecstatic to see a character in Star Trek who embodied a healthy lifestyle. Jack's intense workouts - the heavy lifting, the pull-ups, the HIIT - resonated deeply with me. In my headcanon, the future is filled with individuals prioritizing their health, embracing fitness like Jack.

The season 5 finale beautifully showcased his evolving leadership. He prioritized crew unity over his ego, even if it meant enduring ridicule. He defied Captain Freeman, making the morally right choice by sheltering a Klingon aboard the Cerritos. His actions demonstrated genuine care and support for his crew.

When Jack was finally offered his own command, I erupted with joy. He deserved it. I eagerly anticipate his future adventures as a Starfleet Captain. Perhaps we'll see them explored in comics, novels, or maybe, just maybe, Lower Decks will find a way to continue.

In conclusion, Captain Jack Ransom rules. He's a role model, and I wholeheartedly adore him.
