Review of Star Trek: Lower Decks (2024-) #1 comic book

Star Trek: Lower Decks (2024-) #1 comic book cover

I'm a huge fan of Star Trek Lower Decks. I've watched and rewatched every episode multiple times. I love the characters, the stories, and the countless Easter eggs. In fact, I named my cat Tendi after our favorite Orion!

Beyond the show, I enjoy reading books and comics. We've previously had three issues: a cool 3-part mini-series, a short episode in the IDW 500 comic book, and the super fun Warp Your Own Way riddle.

I loved them all, so I was thrilled to get my hands on the first issue of the new series. Star Trek Lower Decks (2024-) is a fantastic start to what I hope will be a long-running comic series.

The story begins with the Cerritos crew on a series of mundane missions, and Mariner yearning for excitement. Well, she got her wish! The crew discovers the long-lost U.S.S. Bonaventure, seemingly abandoned and in perfect condition. The mystery unfolds, and I'm hooked, eager to follow our heroes as they unravel the secrets of the ship.

The comic book is filled with Easter eggs that will delight fans of Star Trek: The Animated Series. The art style perfectly captures the vibrant and dynamic world of Lower Decks. The character designs are spot-on, and the action sequences are fluid and exciting. I especially loved the panel where Mariner and Tendi comment on Kirk's log entries, a hilarious nod to the classic series.

Ryan North is my favorite Star Trek comic book writer, and his work keeps getting better. This new series is spectacular. I've already reread it twice.

The comic book not only captures the humor and heart of the show but also expands the Star Trek universe in a fun and engaging way. It's clear that Ryan North and the creative team understand the essence of Lower Decks. They've crafted a story that is both a loving homage to classic Star Trek and a hilarious, modern take on the franchise.

If you're a fan of the show, I highly recommend picking up this comic. It's a fantastic addition to the Lower Decks universe and a must-read for any Trekkie.
